 senator covid-19 statement

CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) statement

As a responsible business, the wellbeing of staff and customers is paramount at Senator®.

With the government moving from the “contain” to “delay” phase of their response to the Coronavirus outbreak, we will be encouraging all customers to move meetings from face-to-face to digital for the next 2 weeks, with this timeframe being reviewed based on government guidance.

Our Account Management team are always available to conduct meetings digitally; so that we can show you the latest products in the senator® range, and support you in creating as much business as possible during these difficult times, and our Dedicated Customer Service team are still available on the phone from 8:30am until 5pm Monday-Friday to answer any queries that you may have.

With products manufactured in Germany – meaning that we are not reliant on far-eastern deliveries – and our fantastic UK print team continuing to produce quality pens in a timely manner, we do not envision any issues with our supply chain at this time. We have already introduced measures to limit the spread of COVID-19, such as increased cleaning and guidance on how to limit the risk of exposure, but will of course monitor the situation closely and will advise customers should more prudent measures need to be taken.

We thank you for your cooperation, and hope you all stay well.

Today senator® had the pleasure of having Natalie from Haven House Children's Hospice come visit. After a tour of the building, Sue Hogan and Ann Harris were ecstatic to pass over a check for £1500 which was raised throughout 2019 by the senator UK staff. This was raised through a number of exciting events and our famous 'tuck shop'.

'Only 19% of our running costs are met by the government, which means we have to raise the rest through fundraising initiatives. And so having the backing of businesses is extremely important. We are incredibly grateful to the team at Senator who have supported Haven House since 2015. Their latest donation takes their total raised to over £9,230 in total.  Their support makes a difference to the services we provide and enables us to continue giving vital care to seriously ill children and their families.' Natalie Chevin, Head of Corporate & Major Gifts

senator® pens working to reduce environmental impact

senator® pens are constantly working to reduce their environmental impact.

senator® pens works to reduce its environmental impact

Here at senator® pens, we are constantly following in the footsteps of our German manufacturing plant by working to reduce our environmental impact. Here are a few things you might not know about senator® pens:

  • Our milk is provided by a local dairy farm and the empty bottles are returned and reused.
  • We recycle not only our production waste but packaging waste from our kitchens and other communal areas by providing facilities to recycle cardboard, plastic and cans.
  • Our offices have been fitted with LED lights which are more energy efficient.
  • The water used in cleaning our printing screens is passed through a gravity fed aggregate filtration system to remove chemicals and prevent them entering the water supply.
  • We are currently looking into biodegradable and recycled packaging/shipping materials to reduce waste even further.

senator® are proud to be making a real commitment to the environment and you can find out even more about how we are doing this here.

howHow is sugarcane is transformed into the senator® Bio pens?

Sugarcane is a renewable, fast growing resource that is grown for a number of purposes.

Have you ever wondered how sugarcane is transformed into the senator® Bio pens?

Sugarcane can be converted to lactic acid through fermentation. This is followed by a polymerization process which produces PLA bioplastic pellets. These pellets can then be used for a range of purposes, in many different industries, but we use them to make the innovative senator® Bio pen range.

Sugarcane is a renewable, fast growing resource that is grown for a number of purposes and the agricultural area and water used per KG of PLA makes it one of the most efficient resources. The sugarcane used in our PLA is non-genetically changed sugarcane and is converted into PLA in the Netherlands.

PLA helps us to reduce our carbon footprint as less CO2 is emitted compared to oil-based plastic. In addition to this, senator® Bio pens are produced in our factory in Groß-Bieberau, Germany which is powered by renewable green electricity and where close to 100% of production waste is either reused or recycled. This makes the senator® Bio range a great leap forward for sustainable pens.

senator makes a real commitment to the environment

Here at senator®, we are proud to be making a real commitment to the environment.

Have you heard of “greenwashing”?

It is an attempt for companies to capitalise on the growing demand for products that are environmentally friendly whilst not making a meaningful commitment to green initiatives.

Here at senator®, we are proud to be making a real commitment to the environment. Our plastic pens are produced using 100% green electricity that has been certified according to the ISO 14001 environmental standard and all the component parts of our plastic pens are non-airfreighted from Germany to reduce our carbon footprint. Close to 100% of our production waste is either reused or recycled and we have invested in the development of our innovative Bio range which is made from renewable raw materials. We also ensure all our products have the longest life possible by using refills that last on average 16 times longer than a Far Eastern import.

senator® continues to combat a lack of stationery overseas

Not everyone around the World has easy access to pens and senator® continues to donate to those who need them the most. The Chernigov Centre of Medical Social Rehabilitation of Disabled Children in Ukraine has been helping children since 1992, when they noticed a significant rise in disabilities following the Chernobyl accident. The Centre provides not only rehabilitation for children but training for parents in overcoming and mastering the skills of special care.

Working with the British Humanitarian Aid charity, surplus pens were able to be sent to the Revival Centre to help them continue their wonderful work.

“On behalf of the children, their parents and the staff of the Centre, thank you very much for your generous donation of pens. Thank you for being the Centre’s friend.” Dr. Vasil Pasichnyck.

senator® acquires production building in Groß-Bieberau

Senator, one of the leading manufacturers of personalised promotional writing instruments and mugs, based in Groß-Bieberau, Germany, has today taken a further step in the direction of long-term corporate orientation: the largest production building of the group in Groß-Bieberau, Bahnhofstraße 57, has been acquired from the previous landlord, Merz.

Group CEO Daniel Jeschonowski is pleased: "The acquisition of the production and administration building ensures that the investments of the past three years in processes and machines are now based on solid ground. With an area of more than 20,000 m², we can now operate our printing plant, assembly, injection moulding, mug finishing and administration in a future-proof manner moving forward. This also means, for example, that we obtain the entire electrical energy for our company completely ecologically from renewable raw materials – with this we are leading the way in our industry".

In addition to Groß-Bieberau, Senator GmbH maintains subsidiary locations in the Netherlands, France and the UK. A total of 270 employees stand by the company, which was founded in 1920 and supplies promotional dealers products "made in Germany" from a 10,000 European pallet capacity high-bay warehouse, with full customisation options in short lead-times. In December 2018, 100% of the company was taken over by the Group CEO Daniel Jeschonowski and his wife Stefanie, forming again a family business which stands for continuity and reliability.

Lack of stationery an obstacle for some

Since 2005 African Vision Malawi (known as The Landirani Trust in Malawi) has been helping children and vulnerable people in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world.

The charity currently supports 26 primary schools in Malawi that often have 1000 students, many of these students do not have their own pen and on average 1 pen is used between 10 students.

senator® pens responded to this in October supplying underprivileged children with the necessary stationery at Chitsime Primary School, Lilongwe Secondary School and many other students the charity sponsor at Universities.

Nigel Palmer, Chairman at African Vision Malawi said “A pen or pencil is something a lot of people don’t even have to think about, but unfortunately stationery is an obstacle to many students education in Malawi, simply because they can’t afford it.”

Andrew Hill, Managing Director at senator® pens added: “We have been supporting many local charities for over 20 years now, so for our donations to successfully reach an overseas charity has been amazing, especially after receiving some incredible feedback with photos of our pens in action.”
